Redfield Road recycling centre on the Lenton Industrial Estate is Nottingham City's only council tip, so it's the one most people mean when they search for "Nottingham tip" or "Lenton tip". It's run by Nottingham City Council, it's free, and you don't need to book or register. But it's strictly for city residents, and there are limits on vans, DIY waste and fridges that catch people out.
This guide covers the opening hours for every month, who can use it, the vehicle and DIY rules, the current fridge limit, what you can take, and what to do if the tip isn't an option for you.
Redfield Road tip opening times
Redfield Road opens at 8am every day. The closing time depends on the month, and it's the same on weekdays, weekends and bank holidays. The only days it shuts are Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day.
| Months | Opens | Closes |
|---|---|---|
| January and February | 8am | 4pm |
| March | 8am | 6pm |
| April to September | 8am | 8pm |
| October | 8am | 6pm |
| November and December | 8am | 4pm |
The council says you must have left the site by closing time, not just arrived. If you've got a full car to sort and unload, get there at least half an hour before it closes.
Who can use Redfield Road tip
To use the city tip, the council says you must:
- Live in Nottingham City, not one of the county districts like Rushcliffe, Gedling or Broxtowe. The simple test: if you pay council tax to Nottingham City Council, you can use it. Staff may ask to see your driving licence.
- Bring waste from your own home. If you rent out a house or flat, clearing it counts as trade waste, which isn't accepted.
- Have made the waste yourself. If a builder or tradesperson did the work, getting rid of the waste is their job, not the tip's.
Live in the county instead? Skip to the county tips below.
Landlord, or builder's waste?
The city tip won't take either. Licensed local companies will, and they load it for you. Tell us what needs to go and we'll get you up to 3 free quotes.
Get free quotes →Cars, vans and trailers
Unlike the county tips, the city tip doesn't make you register your vehicle or book a van slot. But not every vehicle is allowed in.
| Allowed | Not allowed |
|---|---|
| Car, with or without a trailer up to 3m long and 2m wide (under 2.5 tonnes) | Van towing any trailer |
| Van or minibus | Pick-up towing any trailer |
| Pick-up, campervan, motorbike or moped | Horsebox or animal transport |
If you turn up in a sign-written or commercial van, expect to be questioned. The site takes no trade waste at all, so staff check the waste isn't from a business.
DIY and rubble limits
You can take waste from DIY jobs you did yourself, like plaster, cement, rubble, tiles, a bathroom suite or windows. But there's a limit per visit:
| Type of DIY waste | Limit per visit |
|---|---|
| Soil, bricks and rubble | 2 × 50-litre rubble bags |
| Bathroom suite or bulky DIY item | 1 item |
| Windows | 1 complete unit |
Bulky DIY items can't be bigger than 2,000mm × 750mm × 700mm, about the size of a bath or shower screen. That covers one bath, one sink with pedestal, a sheet of plasterboard, or a concrete post or lintel.
Renovating? Two bags a visit won't go far
A kitchen or bathroom refit can mean a dozen trips. Get quotes to have the lot collected in one go, or compare skip hire.
Get builders' waste quotes →Fridges and freezers: the current limit
Redfield Road still takes fridges and freezers, but space is extremely limited because of a national shortage of fridge recycling capacity. For now, the council limits residents to:
- one fridge or freezer per visit, and
- one visit per week.
The council has warned it may stop taking fridges and freezers at short notice. If you're buying a new one, ask the shop to take the old one away on delivery. Our guide to getting rid of a fridge freezer in Nottingham covers every option and the council collection prices.
What you can take to Redfield Road
The city tip accepts:
- General and bulky household waste (not food or animal waste)
- Garden waste and soil
- Hardcore and rubble (within the DIY limits)
- Wood, timber and scrap metal
- Fridges and freezers (currently one per visit), large and small appliances, TVs and monitors
- Mixed glass, bottles and jars, flat glass, paper and card, plastics, food tins and drinks cans
- Clothes and textiles
- Batteries, car batteries, fluorescent tubes, mobile phones, printer cartridges, and tapes and discs
- Gas bottles and used engine oil
What Redfield Road tip won't take
- Any business or trade waste, even if it's your own business in your own van
- Waste from a property you rent out, which counts as trade waste
- Builders' waste from work a tradesperson did
- DIY waste over the per-visit limits
- Food and animal waste in general waste
- Waste from outside Nottingham City
If what you've got falls into one of these, you'll need a licensed rubbish removal company instead. See your options below.
Before you go
- Bring your driving licence as proof you live in the city.
- Sort your waste into types before you arrive. It's much quicker to unload.
- Check the limits for rubble, bulky DIY items and fridges.
- Leave time before closing. You have to be off site by closing time.
- Avoid weekend late mornings in spring and summer, when queues are longest.
If you need more than Redfield Road tip can handle
The tip is great for a boot-load or a single trip. It's not always the right answer, though:
| Your situation | Why the tip might not fit | Better option |
|---|---|---|
| Full house or flat clearance | Lots of trips, heavy lifting, and bulky item limits | House clearance |
| Clearing a rental property | Landlord waste counts as trade waste and isn't accepted | House clearance |
| Renovation or building rubble | Only two 50-litre bags of rubble per visit | Builders' waste or skip hire |
| No car, or can't lift heavy items | You load, drive and unload it all yourself | Rubbish removal |
| More than one fridge or freezer | One per visit, one visit a week | Fridge collection |
| Big garden clear-out | Several trips for soil, turf and branches | Garden waste removal |
| Business or shop waste | No trade waste accepted at all | Commercial waste |
It's worth doing the maths. Once you add van hire, fuel, your time and a second or third trip, a "free" tip run often isn't much cheaper than having someone collect the lot in one go. A licensed collection means someone else does the loading, lifting and driving, and you get your Saturday back.

The tip is the cheapest option when it works. Maybe the sofa won't fit in your car, you're over the rubble limit, you're a landlord, or you'd rather not queue. You have three realistic options:
- Council bulky collection. Free for city residents from 26 October 2026: two collections a year per household, up to six items each. Electricals may be charged (£12.50 for the first), so check when you book. Bookings opened online on 19 October. The crew collects from outside only. See our council collection guide.
- A skip. Worth it for a renovation you'll fill over days. See skip hire vs man and van.
- A licensed waste removal company. They load it and take it away, usually at a time that suits you, and they'll take mixed loads the tip won't. This is what we compare for you.
Fill in the form, or call 07348 454816, and we'll pass your details to up to three licensed local companies covering your postcode so they can quote.
Only use a registered waste carrier
Your waste is your responsibility until it's disposed of properly. If you hand it to an unregistered carrier and it's later fly-tipped, you can be fined. Before anyone takes your waste, check them on the Environment Agency register and get a receipt. More in our fly-tipping guide.
Not a city resident? Use a county tip
If you pay council tax to Rushcliffe, Gedling, Broxtowe or another county district, you can't use Redfield Road. Register your vehicle with Nottinghamshire County Council and use one of these instead:
| Recycling centre | Address |
|---|---|
| Beeston | Lilac Grove, Beeston NG9 1PF |
| West Bridgford | Rugby Road, West Bridgford NG2 7HX |
| Calverton | Hollinwood Lane, Calverton NG14 6NR |
| Hucknall | Wigwam Lane, Hucknall NG15 7SZ |
