Getting rid of waste in Clifton

Clifton (NG11) sits south of the River Trent and is part of Nottingham City, not the county. It's one of the biggest residential areas in Nottingham: the large post-war Clifton estate, the older streets of Clifton Village, and neighbouring Silverdale and Wilford, with the tram running straight into the city centre. It's also home to Nottingham Trent University's Clifton campus, so alongside family homes there's a steady turnover of student lets. That mix means plenty of flat and house clearances, end-of-tenancy clear-outs, garden tidy-ups and renovation waste. Because Clifton is in the city, the rules are different from nearby Rushcliffe towns like West Bridgford and Ruddington.

Your tip is Redfield Road, not the county tips

Clifton households use the city's own recycling centre at Redfield Road, Lenton (NG7 2UJ). It's free for city residents, you don't need to book or register a vehicle, but staff may ask for your driving licence as proof of address. You can't use the county tips at West Bridgford or Beeston, as they're for county residents only. Redfield Road also has limits: two 50-litre bags of rubble per visit, one bulky DIY item, and currently just one fridge or freezer per visit, once a week. Our Redfield Road tip guide has the full rules and opening times.

No car, or no way to get it across the river? Plenty of Clifton homes don't have a car big enough for a sofa or a load of rubble, and Redfield Road is on the other side of the Trent. A licensed collection comes to your door, loads it all and takes it away, so you don't need a vehicle at all.

City council bulky collections

From 26 October 2026, Nottingham City Council collects bulky household items for free: every household can book two collections a year, with up to six items each. Electricals may be charged (£12.50 for the first), so check when you book. Bookings opened online on 19 October and slots are first come, first served. Everything has to be left outside, as the crews don't come into your home. That works well for a few items by the front door, but not for a flat on an upper floor or a whole house full of furniture. See our council bulky waste guide for how it compares with a private collection.

Small electricals: drop them at Clifton Leisure Centre

For small broken electricals that fit in a carrier bag, like kettles, toasters, chargers and hairdryers, the city council has a free recycling point at Clifton Leisure Centre on Southchurch Drive (NG11 8AB). Remove any batteries first. For bigger appliances, see our washing machine and appliance guide.

Garden waste in Clifton

The city's brown bin garden waste collection is a paid subscription, running from April to December 2026, with a reduced price for people on Council Tax Support. It's fine for regular grass cuttings, but it won't cope with an overgrown garden, turf, soil or a dismantled shed. A one-off garden waste collection takes the lot in a single visit. Our garden waste guide explains every option.

Student lets and end of tenancy clear-outs

With NTU's Clifton campus nearby, landlords and letting agents in NG11 regularly need rooms and whole houses cleared between tenancies. Left-behind furniture, mattresses and bags of rubbish are trade waste once a landlord is clearing them, so they can't go to the council tip. A licensed clearance company can clear a property in a few hours, ready for the next tenants. See our guides to end of tenancy clearance and student house clearance.

Always use a licensed carrier

If someone offers to take your rubbish for cash and it's later dumped, it can be traced back to you, and you can be fined under your household duty of care. Check anyone on the Environment Agency waste carrier register before they take anything. Every company we connect you with is licensed and gives you a waste transfer note. Our fly-tipping guide shows how to check in two minutes.

FAQs

Waste removal in Clifton: your questions

Which tip can Clifton residents use?

Clifton is in Nottingham City, so residents use the city's recycling centre on Redfield Road, Lenton (NG7 2UJ). It's free, with no booking or vehicle registration, but staff may ask for your driving licence. Clifton residents can't use the county tips at West Bridgford or Beeston.

How much does the council charge for bulky waste in Clifton?

From 26 October 2026 it's free. Nottingham City Council gives every household two free bulky collections a year, up to six items each. Electricals may be charged (£12.50 for the first), so check when you book. Bookings opened online on 19 October. Items must be left outside.

Where can I recycle small electricals in Clifton?

The city council has a free recycling point for small electricals at Clifton Leisure Centre on Southchurch Drive (NG11 8AB). It takes items that fit in a carrier bag, like kettles, toasters, chargers and hairdryers. Remove any batteries first.

Can a landlord take tenants' rubbish to the tip?

No. Waste from clearing a rented property counts as trade waste, which the city tip doesn't accept. Landlords and letting agents need a licensed waste carrier to clear a property between tenancies.

How much does waste removal cost in Clifton?

As a 2026 guide, a single item such as a sofa is around £40 to £70, a small man-and-van load £60 to £150, and a full van load £150 to £300. The quickest way to a fair price is to compare a few quotes for your actual job.

Are the companies you use licensed?

Yes. Every company we connect you with holds a valid Environment Agency waste carrier licence and gives you a waste transfer note, so your waste is handled legally.
