Beeston Tip & Recycling Centre — Opening Times, Address & Rules
Beeston's recycling centre sits on Lilac Grove down in the Rylands, and it's the go-to site for most of Broxtowe — Beeston, Chilwell, Bramcote, Attenborough and Toton. Before you load the car, here's what you actually need to know: today's closing time, the registration rule that catches people out, how much DIY waste you're allowed, and what to do if the tip won't take what you've got.
Beeston Recycling Centre — the essentials
- Address: Lilac Grove, Beeston, Nottingham, NG9 1PF
- Phone: 0300 500 8080 (Nottinghamshire County Council customer service — there's no direct line to the site)
- Run by: Veolia, on behalf of Nottinghamshire County Council — one of twelve household waste recycling centres (HWRCs) in the county
- Who can use it: Nottinghamshire residents only, with a vehicle registered in advance
- Cost: Free for household waste
Beeston tip opening times
The site opens at 8am every single day — it's the closing time that moves through the year:
| Period | Opening hours |
|---|---|
| January – February | 8am – 4pm |
| March | 8am – 6pm |
| April – September | 8am – 8pm |
| October | 8am – 6pm |
| November – December | 8am – 4pm |
Beeston is open every day of the year except Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day. There's no early weekday closing and no separate weekend timetable — Sunday is the same as Monday.
The catch most people hit is the winter switch. If you're used to rolling up at 6pm in the summer, note that from November the gates shut at 4pm, and staff start turning vehicles away shortly before closing so the last loads can be sorted. Aim to arrive at least 20–30 minutes before the closing time on the table above.
Before you go: register your vehicle
Nottinghamshire's recycling centres run a mandatory vehicle registration scheme — you can't just turn up, and unregistered vehicles get turned away at the barrier. Register free in advance at nottinghamshire.gov.uk. You can add up to two vehicles per household.
Three things that catch people out:
- Moved house or changed your car? Your old registration doesn't carry over — you have to complete the form again with the new details.
- Vans, pick-ups and trailers no longer need a paper permit. The old permit system has been scrapped; these vehicles now register exactly like a car. If a guide tells you to book a van permit 24 hours ahead, it's out of date. But it changes again soon: from 2 January 2027, every van will need a pre-booked slot at county recycling centres.
- Hire vans are the exception. If you've rented a van for the job, you must contact the council's customer service team at least 24 hours before your visit, and bring the hire agreement with you on the day.
One rule with no way around it: man-and-van services cannot use recycling centres under any circumstances. If you've paid someone to take your waste away, they're legally required to dispose of it through a licensed trade route — which is exactly why using a properly licensed collector matters. Our guide to fly-tipping and the duty of care explains why that lands on you if it goes wrong.

Beeston takes the full household range you'd expect from a county HWRC:
- General household waste and recycling — paper, card, glass, plastics, cans and foil
- Garden waste — soil, turf, branches and hedge trimmings
- Wood, scrap metal, furniture and mattresses
- Fridges, freezers and other large appliances
- Batteries, textiles and clothing, light bulbs, ink cartridges, books, CDs and bicycles
- Carpets and rugs (see our carpet disposal guide for how to cut and roll them so they're accepted)
Beeston also runs a paint reuse point as part of the Community RePaint scheme, so usable leftover tins can go to someone who wants them rather than into a skip.
Fridges and freezers are accepted but handled separately on site, because the refrigerant gas has to be removed by a licensed handler before recycling — our fridge & appliance disposal guide covers what to expect. Worth knowing: the council has periodically suspended small domestic appliances at its sites during service disruptions, so if you're making a special trip with a kettle or a microwave, it's worth a quick check on the council's site first.
The DIY waste limit — the rule that gets people turned away
This one is specific, and it's the most common reason a car gets refused at the barrier. Per visit, you can bring:
- Up to two 50-litre bags of DIY waste, or
- One single item no bigger than 2000mm × 750mm × 700mm
And you're capped at four visits per household in any four-week period. The waste also has to be from your own home and from work you weren't paid to do.
Crucially, "small DIY" means minor repairs. A full bathroom rip-out, a re-plastered room, a knocked-through wall or a demolished shed base counts as a renovation, and that waste isn't accepted at all — even if you did every bit of it yourself. For those jobs it's a skip or a licensed collection, which is what our builders' waste guide walks through.
Getting there and parking up
Lilac Grove runs off Queens Road East in Beeston Rylands. Coming from the A52 or the M1, head through Beeston towards the university and pick up Queens Road East — the HWRC is signposted on the left as you approach the Rylands. From Chilwell and Toton it's a straight run in along the A6005.
Beeston is also the easiest county site to use if you have mobility problems: unlike several of the others, it has no steps or elevated ramps to negotiate, and staff will help you unload if you ask.
Busiest times are Saturday and Sunday mornings, and the first fine weekend after a spell of bad weather. In summer, an evening run after 6pm is far quieter than a weekend queue.
When the tip isn't the right answer
For a boot-load of sorted recycling, Beeston is free and quick. It stops making sense fast, though:
| Your situation | Why the tip might not fit | Better option |
|---|---|---|
| Full house, flat or garage clearance | Multiple trips, four-visit cap, all the lifting is yours | House clearance |
| Renovation waste or rubble | Not accepted at all beyond the small-DIY limit | Builders' waste or skip hire |
| Sofa, bed or mattress and no van | Won't fit in a car; hire vans need 24 hours' notice | Sofa & mattress removal |
| Waste from a shop, office or rental business | Trade waste is banned at every council HWRC | Commercial waste |
| Student move-out on Lenton or Beeston roads | Everything goes at once, and nobody has a van | Student house clearance |
It's worth doing the maths honestly. A day's van hire, fuel, two or three trips and half your Saturday often isn't much cheaper than paying someone to load the lot in one go — and a licensed collector gives you a waste transfer note, which is the bit that protects you if your rubbish turns up dumped somewhere.
