Which Tip Do I Use in Gedling, Carlton and Arnold?

The short answer: Calverton Recycling Centre.

Hollinwood Lane, Calverton, Nottingham NG14 6NR. It's the only council tip in Gedling borough, and you need to register your vehicle before you go. Open 8am every day. Live on the Nottingham City side of Mapperley or Sherwood? Then it's Redfield Road instead.

If you've searched for "Gedling tip", "Carlton tip" or "Arnold tip", you may have noticed that none of the three towns seems to have one. That's right. Gedling is the name of the borough, not a place with a tip, and Carlton and Arnold don't have their own recycling centres either. This page tells you which tip you can actually use from where you live, and what to do before you go.

Which tip for your area

Where you live decides which tip you're allowed to use, and that's not always the nearest one.

Why there's no tip in Carlton or Arnold

Nottinghamshire County Council runs 12 recycling centres across the whole county, and Calverton is the only one inside Gedling borough. Neither Arnold nor Carlton is on the council's list. A few online maps and directories show a Carlton tip anyway. If you're relying on one of those, you'll be driving to a site that isn't a household recycling centre.

Gedling Borough Council looks after your bins, garden waste and bulky collections. The tips are run by a different body, the county council. That's why the same borough can have a bin lorry on every street but only one tip.

City or county? Check before you drive

Nottingham has two separate tip systems and you can't swap between them. People who live in the city use Redfield Road, and they don't register a vehicle. Everyone else in Nottinghamshire, including all of Gedling borough, uses the county tips and must register.

Use the wrong site and you can be turned away.

Redfield Road turns away anyone who lives outside the city, and the county tips turn away vehicles that aren't registered. If you're not sure which council you're in, put your postcode into GOV.UK's find your local council tool. Mapperley is the common trap, because the boundary runs through it.

Register your vehicle

Registering is free and takes about five minutes:

  1. Make an account on the county council's recycling centre page.
  2. Add your numberplate. You can register two vehicles per household.
  3. That's all. No permit comes in the post, and it works at every county tip.

Phone 0300 500 80 80 if you can't do it online. Vans need a little extra: borrowed or hired vans need temporary access, and from 2 January 2027 every van has to book an appointment. Our Calverton tip guide explains the van rules.

Opening times

Every county tip opens at 8am, seven days a week. The closing time depends on the month: 4pm from November to February, 6pm in March and October, and 8pm from April to September. The tips shut on 25 December, 26 December and 1 January only. Leave yourself plenty of time to unload before the gates shut. The full guide to what Calverton takes and what it won't is in our Calverton tip guide.

Other tips you can use

You aren't tied to Calverton. A registered vehicle can use any county tip, which helps if Calverton has a queue or you're passing another one on your way home.

If you'd rather not go

For one or two big items, a tip run can cost more in time and fuel than it saves. You have three options:

The council route is explained in our council bulky collection guide. If you live in Arnold, Carlton or Mapperley, see our local pages for Arnold, Carlton and Mapperley.

Only use a registered waste carrier

Gedling tip: questions people ask

Is there a tip in Gedling?

Yes, one. Gedling is the name of the whole borough, and the only council recycling centre inside it is Calverton, on Hollinwood Lane (NG14 6NR). There isn't a tip in the village of Gedling itself.

Is there a tip in Carlton?

No. Some online listings show a Carlton tip, but it isn't on Nottinghamshire County Council's list of recycling centres. Carlton residents use Calverton or another county tip.

Is there a tip in Arnold?

No. Arnold residents normally use Calverton, which is the Gedling borough tip. Because your registration works at every county tip, you can also use Beeston, Hucknall or West Bridgford.

Which tip do I use in Mapperley?

It depends which side of the boundary you live on. Mapperley is split between Nottingham City and Gedling. On the Gedling side (Mapperley Plains) you use Calverton and must register your vehicle. On the city side you use Redfield Road in Lenton. Check your postcode on GOV.UK's find your local council tool if you're not sure.

Can I use Redfield Road tip if I live in Arnold or Carlton?

No. Redfield Road in Lenton is for Nottingham City residents only. Arnold, Carlton and the rest of Gedling borough are covered by the county tips.

Do I have to register to use the tip?

Yes. Register your vehicle free on the Nottinghamshire County Council website before you go. You can register up to two vehicles, and there's no permit to print. Phone 0300 500 80 80 if you can't do it online.

What time does the Gedling tip close?

It opens at 8am every day. It shuts at 4pm from November to February, 6pm in March and October, and 8pm from April to September. It's closed on 25 December, 26 December and 1 January.

Can I use a different tip from Calverton?

Yes. Once you're registered you can use any Nottinghamshire county recycling centre, for example Beeston, Hucknall or West Bridgford. You can't use Nottingham City's Redfield Road site.

Does Gedling Borough Council collect old fridges at the moment?

Not at the moment. The council's bulky waste page says collections of cooling appliances such as fridges and freezers are currently unavailable because of national processing capacity issues. You can take one to a county tip yourself if it's empty, or use a licensed private collection.

How much does Gedling Council charge for a bulky waste collection?

At the time of writing the council charges £26 for one item. The second and third items are £13 each, and items four to nine are £8 each, so two items cost £39 and three cost £52. It's booked online, for homes only, and you leave the items out by 6am on collection day.
